Hi, I'm Franca and I work as a student trainee in the Beauty and Essentials department at OTTO. Alongside my work at OTTO, I'm studying for a Master's degree in Multichannel Trade Management in Textile Business at the HAW.
When I'm not at university, I like to be in the office early and start at 8 am. On other days, I come into the office at lunchtime after university, which is also no problem thanks to the flexible working hours.
My first trip is to the coffee machine to get a cappuccino with oat milk - a little ritual that helps me start the day and wake up properly.
Then I check which seat I've booked for the day. My team and I like to sit together in the same area. As there are no fixed workstations, I always have the opportunity to sit next to other people from the team or from other departments. This makes it super easy to get to know everyone and have a chat with everyone.
Thanks to the flexitime model, I have the flexibility to adjust my working hours spontaneously. For example, if a university event is canceled, I can work a little more that week. Alternatively, I take the opportunity to reduce overtime when things are a little quieter. Even though it's not always easy to reconcile studying and working, I manage to combine the two well.
The focus of my tasks is the operational support of three accessory suppliers. Together with my supervisors and our scheduler, I prepare the orders for the respective seasons. This is particularly exciting as the suppliers often come to our store or we visit them.
The appointments are always a little highlight for me because I enjoy the personal interaction with the suppliers and I find it exciting to have some of the items I deal with every day physically in front of me and to be able to select new goods.
As a vegetarian, I'm a big fan of the extensive vegetarian options in our canteens. But now that summer is just around the corner, I also love putting together a fresh, colorful salad at the salad bar and sitting in the sun on campus.
I always enjoy the lunch breaks with my colleagues. It's nice to talk about different topics outside of work and get to know each other better.
The students at OTTO are also well networked thanks to the Starter Days. This also means that I sometimes have lunch with colleagues from other departments and gain exciting insights into other areas and fields of work.
Over the course of the afternoon, there are other appointments on the agenda, such as my "weekly", in which I discuss with my team what tasks I am currently working on and what my current capacities look like. We also clarify any questions that have arisen during the week. These regular meetings really help me to have a good overview of my tasks and bring structure to my day-to-day work.
Like the rest of my working hours, I can be flexible about when I finish work. I usually work until 5 p.m., but I like to decide spontaneously when I want to finish. If I'm working on a particularly exciting task, I sometimes stay a little longer. However, if I have private plans for the afternoon, I may finish work earlier. This flexibility allows me to create a good work-life balance.
